CHARITABLE ACTIVITY
In line with our charitable objects, (see Who We Are), the League aims every year to give grants to combat poverty, hardship and social exclusion in Greece and the UK. We also support education about Greece and Hellenism.
We give grants out of general donations made by our members and supporters during the course of our annual activities.
In recent years, we have made small grants to the following organisations:
Classics for All
The Trussell Trust
Trapeza Trofimon (Food Bank), Greece
The British Museum
Centrepoint for the Homeless
Boroume, Greece
From time to time, the League also launches particular fund-raising campaigns to enable us to help meet specific needs that have arisen.
In recent years, through campaigns of this sort, we have raised:
£10,000 in 2018 for the relief of communities affected by the summer wildfires in East Attica
£8,000 in 2016 for the educational work of the Greek conservation charity 'Elliniki Etairia: Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage'
£8,000 in 2012 through our Christmas Appeal, for the Greek charity 'Trapeza Trofimon (Food Bank – Foundation Against Hunger)'
Our own programme of events is supported in part by sponsorship and in part by donations from members and other supporters.
We are keen to continue and, where possible, expand our charitable efforts, both to maintain our own cultural programme and to support relevant causes.
Fires in Attica 2018: a fundraising campaign
In 2018, we launched an appeal to raise funds for relief of those affected by that summer's devastating fires in Attica.
Working closely with Desmos, a not-for-profit organization based in Athens, which acts as an intermediary between donors and charitable organisations in need, we supported a range of causes and vulnerable groups, including emergency response and recovery operations.
Thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters, we made a grant of £10,000 to Desmos, to help the affected communities.
We express our gratitude to all who contributed so generously to this appeal.
With help from us and from many others, Desmos was able to reconstruct and renovate four playgrounds and three adjacent basketball courts in Mati and Neos Voutzas, at the heart of the area most severely afflicted. These community facilities had either been completely destroyed or been rendered unusable by the tragic fires.
Playgrounds and sports facilities in public spaces promote social inclusion and community cohesion. We were delighted to be able to play our part in the effort to reconstruct fire-affected communities.
How to support us
Through the year, we welcome donations by new members, supporters and the public at large, to enable us to make grants of this sort. You can find out how to join us as a member here and how to donate here.
As we are a charity registered in England and Wales, UK taxpayers can make tax-efficient donations to us through the Gift Aid scheme.
