On the 23rd May 2025, the Anglo-Hellenic League hosted an event at Kokotos Estate, in the outskirts of Athens, to celebrate the 18th century botanical expedition which culminated in the Flora Graeca publication.
A lavishly illustrated catalogue of Greek flora, the 10-volume Flora Graeca was published in England between 1806 and 1840 and is widely considered as one of the most extraordinary botanical publications of all time. It was conceived by John Sibthorp, Professor of Botany at Oxford, and illustrated by Ferdinand Bauer, the celebrated Austrian artist.
Members of the League and guests were treated to a talk on the subject by Sophia Rhizopoulou, Professor of Botany at the University of Athens (Emerita), who is also the translator into Greek of The Magnificent Flora Graeca: How the Mediterranean Came to the English Garden by Stephen Harris.
Kindly sponsored by the Kokotos Estate.
